Lee Residence
Cedar by the Sea, BC Completed: 2006 2400 SF The building site - a large, open, gently sloping field with a fringe of deciduous trees above a glorious east-facing ocean view - presented both challenges (providing privacy and shelter) and opportunities (wonderful ocean views and solar exposure, unlimited landscaping possibilities) for this retirement home for a BC couple. Our design intentions were thus to maximize both light and view, while creating a sense of privacy, enclosure and intimacy. This is partially achieved by lengthening the house to 70' in the east-west direction and placing it to the north side of the site, where it acts an effective windblock and screen from the neighbours. This, in combination with the detached garage and connecting walkway, creates a landscaped "courtyard". In addition, the shed roof slopes consistently down to the south - to create covered entry and outdoor living areas and to protect the interior from the summer sun. Our clients plan to age in place in this home and for that reason, all essential rooms and functions are located on the ground-level upper floor. Being avid gardeners, they were were also concerned about being careful with water use, and saw rainwater collection as an important component of the plan. |
